The Benishangul Gumuz higher court announced that it passed an up to five years prison sentence and fined four individuals who are charged for giving two children to overseas adoption.
As the court’s representative Ato Kebede Gudeya told ENA, the four individuals on whom the court passed its verdict are Mulugeta Teferi, Siraj Ibrahim, Abdulkerim Dibissa and Mulugeta Hailu.
The four individuals are accused of giving a one and four year old children to an overseas adoption using a now defunct child care center named Ethio-dicha at the Assossa town with a false testimony before the court that the children are orphans, where they are not and without the knowledge and consent of their parents.
The court’s representative reminded that the zone higher court in Assosa had previously allowed the accused to walk free. Then the Benishangul Gumuz’s higher court in his Friday session sentenced Mulugeta Teferi to five years in prison and fined two thousand birr. The other three individuals whom the court found as collaborators in the crime have also given a two months prison sentence.
The court has also ordered two suspects on whom no incriminating evidence found to walk free.
