We, the undersigned Ethiopian taxpayers, have learned from media outlets that the Office of the President concluded a 400,000 birr per month rental contract for a residence of former President Girma Woldegiorgis on Friday September 20, 2013.

We understand the need to provide an honorable retirement for the former President, we found the rental house contract extravagant – both in terms of the size of the house and its expenses – a shocking matter.

We do not believe it is economical to rent a house at an amount that can easily be used to build one in a country where the Federal Housing Agency is the largest land lord. We are also concerned that the deal could set a bad precedent with regard to government expenditure, in general, and retired officials’ accommodation, in particular.

Therefore, we urge you to scrap the rental contract and apply sensible, economic alternative.

እኛ ፊርማችንን ከሥር ያሠፈርነው ኢትዮጲያውያን ግብር ከፋዮች የኢፌዲሪ ፕሬዚዳንት ጽ/ቤት ለቀድሞው ፕሬዚዳንት ግርማ ወልደግዮርጊስ የሚያገለግል መኖሪያ ቤት በ400,000 ብር ወርሀዊ ክፍያ ለመከራየት ባለፈው መስከረም 10/2006 ውል እንደፈረመ ከሚዲያ ተገንዝበናል፡፡

ተሰናባቹን ፕሬዚዳንት በክብር መሸኘት እንደሚገባ የምናምን ቢሆንም የኪራይ ውሉ ግን እጅግ የተጋነነ እና በደሀ ግብር ከፋይ ሕዝብ ላብ ላይ እንደመቀለድ ሆኖ አግኝተነዋል፡፡ ይህ ቁንፅል ክስተትም፥ በብዙ ዘርፎች ውስጥ ሊኖር ለሚችለው ብክነትና ግድ የለሽነት እንደ አንድ ማሳያ ነው የሚል ስጋት አድሮብናል፡፡

የፌዴራሉ መንግስት ትልቁ ቤት አከራይ በሆነበት ሀገር፣ የዓመት ኪራይ ወጭው አዲስ ቤት ለመገንባት በሚያስችል የኪራይ ክፍያ ገንዘብ መጠን ቤት መከራየት በጣም አስደንጋጭና አሳዛኝ ነው። ይህ የተጋነነ የኪራይ ክፍያ መጠን ለቀጣይ – በመንግስት ገንዘብ አወጣጥ ረገድ ሆነ በጡረተኛ ባለስልጣኖች ጥቅማጥቅሞች ረገድ – መጥፎ አርአያ ይሆናል የሚል ስጋት አድሮብናል፡፡

በመሆኑም የቤት ኪራይ ውሉ ተሰርዞ ተገቢና አዋጭ በሆነ አማራጭ እንዲተካ እንዲያደርጉ አጥብቀን እንጠይቃለን፡፡
