Renowned Ethiopian musician Girma Yifrashewa’s album entitled Love and Peace came in 23rd on the US billboard classical music charts following a concert at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, Washington DC on July 30th.
This concert coincided with the launching of the album recorded by Unseen Worlds Records. After a big sale of the album, it has been on the billboard for more than two weeks. The album has tracks taken from his previous album entitled Elilita and his famous song the Shepherd with the Flute (Balewashintu Eregna) for an international audience.
Girma, who is pleased with this, told The Reporter that this opportunity is recognition not only for him but also for the rich and unexplored Ethiopian music. He does not deny the fact that this opportunity was unexpected. Even though he does not know if there was ever an Ethiopian musician whose music has been entered onto the billboard, he thinks he is paving the way for other Ethiopian musicians.
“This is not only for me but also, collectively, this is exciting news for Ethiopian music,” Girma said.
According to him, Unseen Worlds Records gives opportunities to non-mainstream musicians and musicians who are hidden but with potential. The album Love and Peace for Girma is what he calls dream music, which tries transcending the concept of love and peace in any situation. Renowned for his piano skills, Girma is a classical musician who has been able to win many hearts with his works, particularly Balewashintu Eregna, which is a tribute to the legendary professor Ashenafi Kebede. Girma is one of the musicians who blends classical music with Ethiopian rhythms and is making a name for himself internationally.
